Ectoparasites are responsible for causing a lot of nuisance in your beloved pet’s life. To know severity of infestation caused by them we have to take them serious in order to control them. Some facts about these ectoparasites are listed below.


Ticks -

 

  • Ticks can be found worldwide.
  • Ticks are related to spiders. Technically they are not insects.
  • There are about 825 species of ticks belonging to 7 biological families.
  • Ticks have 4 life stages—egg, larva, nymph, and adult.
  • Ticks can survive from several months to several years without food if environmental conditions permit.
  • Ticks can transmit many diseases in dogs like Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky mountain spotted fever, Anaplasmosis etc.
  • Ticks should be removed as soon as possible to minimize disease and damage.
  • If you handle ticks with bare hands, some tick-borne diseases (like Rocky Mountain spotted fever) can be immediately transmitted through breaks in your skin.
  • Most ticks live in particular microhabitats, such as tall grass or the border between wooded areas and lawns.
  • A single female tick can lay thousands of eggs.
  • Ticks exist for more than 50 million years on planet earth.
  • Ticks find their hosts by detecting animals' breath and body odors, or by sensing body heat, moisture and vibrations.
  • Ticks have eight legs.
  • Tick saliva may cause a poisoning in the host.


Fleas -


  • There are more than 2,200 species of fleas recognized worldwide.
  • Fleas are wingless.
  • Flea is known to be a best jumper. A flea can jump vertically up to 7 inches and horizontally up to 13 inches.
  • Fleas do not use muscle power for jumping.
  • Hard squeezing between the fingers is normally insufficient to kill a flea.
  • Life cycle of fleas consists of Egg, larva, pupa and adult.
  • Flea populations are evenly distributed, with about 50% eggs, 35% larvae, 10% pupae, and 5% adults.
  • Female fleas can lay 5000 or more eggs over their life.
  • Some people and pets suffer allergic reactions to flea saliva resulting in rashes.
  • Fleas transmit not only a variety of viral, bacterial and rickettsial diseases to humans and pets, but also protozoans and helminths
  • After combing your pet with flea comb what you think like dead fleas are actually flea excreta.
  • For effective control of flea infestation and reinfestation, all the stages of flea lifecycle should be controlled.
  • Today, combination products like Fiprofort plus spot on containing Fipronil and S- methoprene is treatment of choice for long term control of flea infestation and reinfestation.

Lice -

  • Members of over 3,000 species of wingless insects.

  • The lice that infest dogs, cats, and other pets are not normally attracted to humans.

Mites -

  • Mites are among the most diverse and successful of all the invertebrate groups.
  • It is estimated that 48,200 species of mites have been described.
  • Mites are so tiny that we cannot see without a microscope.
  • Dust mite allergens are thought to be among the heaviest dust allergens.
  • Common diseases caused by mites in pets are sarcoptic mange, demodectic mange and otodectic mange.
  • Sarcoptic mange mites burrow under the skin. 
  • Sarcoptic mange is also called as scabies.
  • Demodex mites live in or near the hair follicles of mammals.
  • Demodectic mange is not itchy while Sarcoptic mange is very itchy.
  • Sarcoptic mange is infectious to human unlike that of demodectic mange.
  • Mites are a common cause of ear infection.
  • Some insect growth regulators like S- methoprene can help to control mite infestation in dogs.
  • Excess of worms in your pets gastrointestinal tract can make him more prone to demodectic mange. So regularly deworm your pet.
